Discount points are percentage points you can pay when you close to essentially buy a lower interest rate. One point is equal to one percent of your mortgage amount, so for a $500,000 loan, one point will cost $5,000. If you can afford to pay additional money upfront, you might find that paying one point to knock 0.25 percent off your rate will be more economical in the long run.
