What to do if you detect possible fraudulent activity

If you discover possible fraudulent activity at any point in the home buying or selling process, you must take immediate action. Fraudulent activity can include unauthorized credit report requests, attempts to apply for a mortgage in your name, unauthorized credit card usage, or possible identity theft. If you detect any suspicious activity, take the following steps immediately:

  • Contact your banks, credit card companies, and any business institutions with accounts that you believe may have been compromised. Many have fraud departments that will freeze your accounts.

  • Create fraud alerts with the three major credit reporting agencies: ExperianTransUnion, and Equifax. This will prevent any bad actors from using your identity to make a credit report request and open any new accounts in your name.

  • File a report with your local law enforcement.

  • If you believe you are the victim of identity theft, file a report with the FTC.

  • For an additional level of protection, create an account with an identity theft and credit monitoring service. These services range in price from approximately $10 to $30 per month and will continuously monitor your credit, actively search for potentially fraudulent activity, and ensure you against a certain amount of monetary damages.
